Packing and Unpacking: Dos and Don’ts for Moving

Packing and Unpacking

When you’re moving to a new home, it’s important to make sure you pack and unpack boxes and belongings the right way. Knowing how to do so and what to avoid doing can make your entire move less stressful overall. Keep the following tips on packing and unpacking in mind while planning your upcoming move or simply use a Packing and Unpacking service in London!

Do: Pack an Essential Box or Two

While packing your belongings, you don’t want to have to worry about digging through boxes to find important everyday items, such as medication or your toothbrush. You should pack these kinds of items in a box or two in order to make sure you have easy access to them at your new home.

Don’t: Make Larger Boxes Too Heavy or Too Empty

When packing your belongings, don’t make bigger boxes too heavy by filling them up with a lot of books or other items. Pack these kinds of items into smaller boxes to make them easier to lift and move. You should also avoid leaving larger boxes only half-filled. These boxes might end up collapsing when other boxes are placed on top of them. Fill bigger boxes up with lighter items, so they won’t be too heavy to carry or lift.

Do: Stock Up on Packing Supplies

You don’t want to run out of packing tape or other supplies while you’re in the middle of packing. Make sure you have plenty of boxes, packing tape, markers, bubble wrap, and other supplies handy throughout the packing process. Keep in mind that larger or heavier boxes need to have enough tape on the bottom to prevent them from coming open.

Don’t: Forget to Label Boxes

Having labels on your boxes makes it much easier to quickly see where they all go at your new place. While you’re packing, put labels on each box that indicate the room or area they belong in, such as the bedroom or dining room. Make your labels easy to read, and place them on the sides of boxes rather than on the top. Labels on the tops might be hidden when boxes are stacked up, making it more difficult to tell where they go.

Do: Unpack Essential Boxes First

When you get to your new home, unpack your essential boxes before you unpack anything else. Having convenient access to items you need right away or items you’ll be using soon can give you less to worry about later on when you’re tired from moving and unpacking.

Don’t: Unpack All Boxes the Same Day

Although you’ll want to unpack certain boxes the day you move in, such as kitchen boxes, there’s no rush to unpack everything the first day. You should unpack your essential boxes and some other boxes with items you use regularly. Unpacking everything the same day can be overwhelming, so make it easier on yourself by taking your time.
